The Stabat Mater Atelier - A Catholic Art School in Tyler, Texas
A Partner of the Scala Foundation - ART & CULTURE
Are you looking for somewhere to learn to draw and paint in the naturalistic tradition of sacred art? Have a look at this…
I want to bring to your attention an art school where you can learn to paint in traditional styles. It is the Stabat Mater Studio, which opened this September. I recommend it for soup-to-nuts training in naturalistic art styles. Robert Puschautz, whose vision this formation reflects, has consulted me as a sounding board. The Scala Foundation, for whom I am Artist-in-Residence, is partnering with them to promote their excellent work on behalf of the Church and to contribute to the evangelization of the culture.
This Fall, a mixture of full-time core students and part-timers began intensive instruction in the fundamentals of drawing from Robert and Art Fellow AnneMarie Johnson.
One key feature distinguishing the Stabat Mater Studio from other classical art programs is that it is a working studio with an openly Catholic ethos that offers students on-the-job training by participating in commissions given to the studio's master artists.
I am on their mailing list, and below, I present their monthly newsletter from January 2025. Very impressive, I would say!
I promote them because the faculty are faithfully Catholic, it offers a full formation - with a focus, as well as drawing and painting, on the mathematics of beauty, art history and the liturgy as the wellspring of Catholic culture.
STUDIO UPDATE:
What's being painted this week?
The Good Samaritan After Morot by Rachel Perry, 35 x 47 oil on canvas, 2025
This week, Studio Assistant Rachel Perry has put the finishing touches on her first large-scale master copy!
This painting was done after the renowned 19th-century French painter, Aime Nicolas Morot. The copy was assigned to Rachel as one of her final projects in our Core Curriculum. After three years as an apprentice of the Stabat Mater School of Art, this project was meant to familiarize her with painting the full figure in color. She began studying and preparing for this painting in February 2024. After almost a year of painting, she is putting the final brush strokes on her largest artwork to-date.
Here are some pictures of this painting's development process:
